Over the past few years, life for just about everyone has been changed and challenged, for so many reasons. Now that I'm in my late 50's, and both my parents are in their 80's, my eyes have been opened to reality that I've never even thought about until recently.
First, life feels like it goes by so fast. We have dreams and goals that we try to obtain over our lifetime. Buying homes, building retirement income, working hard to take family vacations and travel. What happens when we get older? What happens if our memory doesn't work well enough and we need our adult kids to assist us? Suddenly, P.O.A's, Trusts, attorneys, and other legalese comes into play and we are stressed to the bone! Most of us love and honor our parents and it breaks our hearts to see their lives come to this. Even if they are still in a good physical and mental capacity, at some point, they may need to relocate into a senior community.
This happened to my aunt a few years ago in NY. She wanted to sell her home and move to Florida into an independent living community. I helped her to list it with a good real estate agent. I helped her find a good senior home in Florida, pack their belongings and hire a moving company. Then my siblings and I had to deal with our parents who were divorced many years ago and had remarried. Separately, we had to deal with where and how they would live since my Dad has dementia and other illnesses. Dad is now in an assisted living apartment. My mom lives with my sister who was an R.N. for 25+ years but still has to deal with stress of caring for mom 24/7.
Going through this experience helped us to really understand and learn the process but also see how stressful it could be. That is why we decided to start our journey helping other families with their parents.
